While in Portland this weekend, there was one place I especially wanted to spend some time; Powell’s books. Powell’s books is an enormous book store located in downtown Portland that has shelves and shelves of books. The first time I went there I was overwhelmed by the mass amount of books and spent most of my time browsing a few different sections. As a fan of used books, I was very excited to learn that there were used books mixed in with the new.
On my second trip to Powell’s it was a chilly evening. My mother and I headed in the direction of Powell’s intending to spend some time there, but became sidetracked. Despite this, we did end up at the warm book store looking in different sections. Being so big, Powell’s has many sections including a rose room, a pearl room, etc. My mom wanted to look in the home section, so we headed over there. I expected to be bored, but instead found a great find. As a big Barbra Streisand fan I was pleased at seeing her book My Passion for Design on the shelf. I picked it up, planning to flip through it a bit but instead ended up reading, and enjoying, the intro. This book was not only a find I did not expect, but being used was rather marked down. That’s one of the great things about Powell’s; you never know what you’re going to find!
Powell’s is a cozy, despite the large size, bookstore and I highly suggest checking it out if you are ever in Portland. Had I more time, I can imagine myself discovering more and more of this bookshop.
Packing for a journey I am soon to take got me thinking about what my travel essentials are. It is very easy for one to take hopping on a plane for granted, but for me each time I get on a plane it is exciting and new. The following are some of my travel essentials.
1. A small journal or notebook.
I like to write things down in the evenings when I am somewhere away from home. A small notebook that fits into your bag is perfect for this. My favorite notebook, and the one I will be bringing on this trip, is the classic Moleskine notebook.
2. A good book.
When traveling anywhere there are always moments to kick back for a moment and a good book is perfect for that. Picking books that have to do with your travel destination is always nice, if you’re reading on the way or while there. Classics or books you know you can read again and again are great for trips. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is one of those for me.
Wherever I go I always know I can count on my trusty converse. Any pair of sneakers that you know you can use are great!
Whether you listen to music on a plane, in the car, or just hanging out it’s always great to have a soundtrack to your travels.
5. Patagonia down sweater
It’s always great to be prepared for whatever weather that may come at you and a Patagonia down sweater does just that for you. Patagonia’s are sometimes referred to as “patagucci’s” due to their expensive price, but in the long run it is definitely worth the price.
6. A small bag
Though it is not always possible, I always strive to fit into a small carry on luggage. If possible, this makes traveling much easier and less stressful.
